Vicksburg, Jan 7th/60
My dear Aunt Lucy Malindia Alexander,
I received your very welcome letter on the third of this month and would have answered it sooner but I had "no paper," "If you can't afford larger sized paper just let me know and I will send you some larger." I think that you ought not to expect as long letters from me as you write for I am not at home and you are and I know all of the folks at home that you do and you do not know anyone here that I do. I have a slight aquaintance [sic] with the family that you was visiting when you last wrote and like them very well. I hope that the gentleman will be liberal enough to take you out to sleigh ride some as they have not had that pleasure for some time, how I wish that I could be there to go some too, but I guess that I will have as nice a time as any of you, as I am getting aquainted [sic] here some now. Mrs Pattie Sleeper called here this evening but Jennie and I had gone out to take a walk so I didn't get to see her. I was very sorry for I have heard so very much about her that I wanted to see her. The Magnolia is first landing she is a beautiful boat one of the largest that is on the river, and it is such a bright moonlight night that we can read her name from our window. I hope you had a pleasant time at the party
