Edgefield Dist. March 29 1862
My Dear Grandson,
Your letter dated Feb. 23rd, and postmark'd March 11th reach'd me a little time, before, yours of the 16th of March, postmark'd from Humbolt Tenn. Before we received the latter, we were inform'd of the evacuation of Columbus. I write now, not knowing where to direct, so as to get into your hands; as you mention'd in the last, that you were on the move still. If you should receive this, it will no doubt give you pleasure, to hear from us; and if it should not get into your hands, I am still confident, that without it, you will be assured, that you are neither forgotten nor neglected. Our enemies seem at last to be in earnest, to accomplish our subjugation; but I think, they will find (not withstanding the delusions practiced by their leaders, and the deliberate falsehoods propagated by them) that we are yet more firmly determined, with the blessing of God, to fight it out to the last, and not to be subdued, while there is a man or boy

I will direct this letter to Humbolt, Tennsee. While you are moving from place to place, always add a line to your letter, to say, where your answer may be sent, with the most probability of its reaching you. God bless and preserve you, is the constant prayer of your affte grandfather
