              Shuqualak Miss. January 8th 1865

Dear Lee
                   Your letter of the 3rd was received two days upon the eve of my departure to my new home and new field of operations. I am stationed at this place as Purchasing Commissary in charge of a District of three counties. I have Mrs. Pope with me - we are very comfortably situated boarding in a very agreeable family. We are anxious for you to visit Columbus. Mrs. Morrow and Miss Clodie told me to write you to make your home at their house during your stay in town. Suppose you stop and spend a few days with me on your way. I can make you comfortable but can not promise you an exciting time. I would be very glad to see you and talk over old times. Come by all means if possible � Can't you work a transfer to the Hospital at Columbus in that event permission would be granted you to remain at a private house. We will expect you. All excitement from Raids has subsided. Columbus is now quiet. There is no local news that would interest you specially. I remember no marriages or death of recent date among your friends or acquaintances, either male or female. Sam Battle Fort who married his cousin Miss Collier of Tuscaloosa on the 20 inst. He was wounded in November, shot through both shoulders and at the time of his marriage was unable to push on a coat.
