Claim against US Government
Directed by Col. Hatch Commander of 7000 thousand Cavelry [sic] Troops come to the Farm of Doctor W. H. & Jane S. Calhoun on the 1 day of May 1863 staid 12 hours, furnished the entire Army with all kinds of Provisions for man & Horses. Col. Hatch told make out his bill and all would be paid at the market Price Doctor Calhoun was over age and Invalid in bad health, was not able to be in the army[.] We had 2 Sons one 13, one 10 none in the war[.] he said we were entitled to pay for the suplies [sic] taken. our Farm is situated on the publick road at crosses from Tupelo and Okolona & Pontotoc & Verona on the contested ground betwen [sic] the the [sic] two armes [sic] an [sic] we were very much exposed all during the war the Norther [sic] army Robed [sic] us 4 different times on the 16 of December 1862 Col. Coon with a company of Cavelry [sic] from Oxford to Shannon burnt the Deps and on there [sic] return back they stoped [sic] and carried off 6 very fine mules, worth 2 hundred dollars apiece and 3 fine Horses worth 2 hunded [sic] apiece and 12 new Bridles one dollar each. On the 23 of April Col Quill with a part of Col Smith's army, returning to Corinth after the Pala Alto fight, stoped [sic] here at 11 oclock and staid until 4 in the evening, fed his command takeing [sic] over
