Transcript	Oct 4th 1936 Mr Mims Williams Magee, Miss Dear Sir: I am writing you a confidential letter and ask you very kindly to read and give same your careful consideration. I was born at old Westville Jany 25th 1878 and my Father was the late W W Dampeer, who was a whole brother to my late aunt Chartie M Gaskill, whom I am sure you knew both quite well. I havent [sic] lived in Miss in several years and done office work all my life until 42 yrs old when I tried farming. Knowing nothing about it I lost $2500.00 cash in 1920-21 & 22 & you remember what 1920 was. Cotton went from 40 c to nothing. On top of that I stuck to farming & learnt to be a very good farmer & worked like a negro until 4 yrs ago when Dr advised me to stay out of field. My wife & I came to N.O. year ago last June & bought out a rooming house, [page 2] but overhead was so great could not make it without running a regular sporting house and we would not do it. Besides we were too good to people and let them beat us out of $125.00 and we finally went broke & lost every thing we had-we have a little money oweing [sic] us that we will get but dont [sic] know just when. Now Mr Williams you dont [sic] know me but for the sake of my dear old Father and Aunt Charatie I am calling on you to please take a chance and grant me a small personal loan of $20.00 and give me 6 months, <rather a long time for a small loan> in which to pay you $22.00. My wife has heart, kidney & bladder trouble and I am having a time trying to make ends meet. My wifes [sic] Insurance policy has expired and unless I can revive it by Wednesday the 7th I'll loose [sic] same and God knows I dont [sic] want to loose [sic] her policy. [page 3] If she were to die tonight, I could not bury her. Mr Williams I would not lie to you for $20.00 and we are in dire need of this money and I beg you to open your heart and let me have this small personal loan and God in Heaven being my Helper I'll pay you on or before Apr 1st 1937 so help me God. My oldest Sister married Jim Walker at Mt Olive and they would gladly help me, but Jim simply hasent [sic] got it. Again I urge you to kindly do this for me by return mail and you will never regret it. Please do not reveal this to a soul, but help me out & then if I fail to pay you, why you may gladly expose me. Hoping to hear favorably at once and with very best wishes, I am Respectfully Homer S Dampeer c/o Stratford Hotel 749 St Charles st New Orleans La [back of page 2] P.S. Now I do not drink, smoke or gamble, but we are badly in need & no one right now that I can call on. We have a room at Stratford Hotel which is a small cheap 20 room hotel.
