Transcript	[typed note pasted in front cover] This little book contains a few things written down by my dear father, John Calvin Williams, during the awfull [sic] yellow fever epidemic here, at Dry Grove, Miss, during the fall of 1878. In which my father died with the fever on the 31st of October - 78 , It plainly showes [sic] that my father was in deep trouble and turned to God for help. I am satisfied that he was converted, and I truly hope and believe, was saved. It showes [sic] that Miss Jane Flewellen, who lived with us, died on Monday the 2nd day of October, so also Tom & Charlie Caston, and on the same day a negro woman, Caroline Wolfe, died. On the 4fourth [sic] Tom Caton died. CA Williams [page 1] To Bryann Coben (? Lizzie- A few days ago Dr West Oct 4th 1 Bu of corn use of cooks Oct 6 1 Bu corn [faded] cooks [remainder of page torn off] [page 2] Oh Lord have mercy On us all Oh Lord have mercy on us! [page 3] Oh how it makesmy Heart ache to see my Friends-dying all around[.] Sometimes two in a room at a time. And oh how hard it is to hear thirty mourns and to see death on their faces. Oh Doctors where are your medical skill [sic]- tis mere moonshine[.] All treating & all medicine seem to avail nothing This is the most awful Plague I ever witness. J.C. Williams [page 4] May God Bless our people and may it please our Almighty God to once more restore this People in Health and happiness God grant that those that are gone may be blessed. It is the prayer of the sufferers. How often I think how sinful I was-but I now feel that I am changed and that though the aid of Jesus our Savior I shall in herit a Heavenly reward [page 5] [figures] Dan Hangen [page 6] Mallan. Jones Mrs Ema Long Miss Emma Long [page 7] October 6th Sunday Morning I was taken sick this morning hope it will not be serious[.] Cora is very sick But thank the Balance are well Spencer came to day and will stay with us until frost Oct 7th Monday Morning Cora a little better[.] I am doing very well have no fever[.] Dr Douglas came to see me today. 8th of October Cora better today[.] I am sitting up thank the Lord[.] Jim Stewart this morning [page 8] Poor little helpless things they sleep ignorant of the danger that awaits them But the Lord Giveth and the Lord taketh away Blessed be the Lord Monday Night Poor Jane I think will die to night[.] My God How it makes my heart ache to hear her mourn[.] She now has Black Vomit[.] May God Bless her and take her soul to Heaven. Oh Lord have mercy upon us all Have mercy Oh Lord upon my poor little Children [page 9] Sunday night Sept 28 No one knows the trouble I am seeing to night- my little children are lying on floor in this miserble [sic] cook house[.] Jane & Camie are lying in the House expecting to die and I myself quite sick and not able to sleep. Oh my God have mercy on us and restore us once again in health and happiness[.] I never thought I could stand what I have seen in these last 3 weeks But if it is the Lords [sic] will we should not complain Oh Lord have mercy on us. Oh Lord have mercy on my little children [page 10] Sept 25 Wednesday Budie died today 1878 Oct 2 Jane Flewellen died today 11 oclock [page 11] Oct 2 Jane Flewellen died today Tom Caston & Charlie Caston also[.] also old ? Wolfe wife Caroline died Oct 4 Wiggo Caston died this morning 1 Â½ oclock
