Letter, Tolbert Fanning to John P. Darden; 01/14/1850

              Franklin College Jan 14th 1854    Brother Darden,    I herewith forward you the accounts of Horatio Read and T. Darden, and you will perceive that I have not charged for the 2 1/2 months vacation. If this is not a sufficient reduction of price, I am willing for you to pay according to your original understanding of the matter and I will be satisfied.     The boys are now, I am sure, learning very well, and I am determined there shall be no ground of complaint.    As to their assistance to me I will endeavor to define it. The [sic] assist an hour or two in the day, in managing the stock in winter, and in gardening in the spring and summer. Sometimes they work of Saturdays and holy-days, for which I have been in the habit of paying them each fifty cents per day cash. With the amount they purchase such things as they need.    I would make a suggestion in reference to their future course. Horatio seems determined to make himself a good scholar. He has the ability, and is now studying the languages and mathematics in the regular course; but although Thadeus has been studying Latin, I doubt his final success; and I have him at present pursuing the English branches, under my immediate direction. They both seem more inclined to business than formerly;
