Franklin College Jan 5th 1853 Brother Darden, Yours is before me, and inclosed [sic] I hope you will find the papers to your satisfaction. If the receipt for Horatio should not be to your liking, inform me. For 1851, I inclosed [sic] all the amounts. I had the boys to work some in ? , I suppose enough to pay board, though Horatio has manifested no peculiar devotion to labor; and specially so, if it be not employment for which he has a fancy. Thadeus' is a little more than I desire; but let me state that, since I agreed to keep one for $180 and the other for $160, our living has much increased, and their little labor is of but small service to me. Again, I do not clothe them as well as I would wish, and if you can authorize me to spend a little more money for them, I would be pleased. The boys are growing up, and I wish them to appear as well as youths of their age should. These are but suggestions. I will adhere to the former agreement if you prefer. We have not changed our mode of operations[.] Our object, has been from the beginning to assist those who need, by letting them work part of the time.
