Title | Letter to Cammie Williams |
Description | Letter to Cammie Williams from C. V. Hill in Punta Gorda, British Honduras (present-day Belize). Hill mentions a "tariff bill" that probably refers to the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act of August, 1894. "Breckenridge" probably refers to Clifton Rodes Breckinridge, an Arkansas Congressman from 1883-1894, briefly unseated due to a scandal involving voter fraud and assassination of another candidate. |

Transcript | Punta Gorda, British Hon', C.A. Sept 25 [18]94 Dear Cammie, Popping up so unexpectedly will no doubt cause you to hold y'r breath, but nevertheless the letter is a reality[.] It has been so long since I saw you & things have changed so that I feel much younger (?) & no doubt you are a "benedict" by this time[.] Alow [sic] me to congratulate [page 2] you at this late day & may you ever be happy. Now I may have made a mistake the rumor may not have been true but it stated that you had already married. If I could make the trip to the Grove this eavening [sic] & call on the Girls tomorrow no doubt "I would old in spite of my youngness["] The "Girls" this side are poco scarce except of yaller hue, they is no good. When you see Miss Laura C tell her I will send her some Coffee Berries soon & some plants also [page 3] if she wishes them, but you must first present my compliments then introduce me. (?) We are now in the midst of our rainy season & very disagreable [sic] it is. The passage of the new "Tariff Bill" will no doubt blot out a great deal of eavil [sic] the Farmers have been subjected to. Congress is largely composed of such men as Breckenridge & a great many worse characters too. Lewis has been back to the States with his wife & returned, has a splendid position with his uncle on sugar plantation [page 4] & is making money. He denies to this day ever having proposed to Miss Ollie & gets red hot over the subject. If you ever get to see Miss Ollie tell her I never cease to adore her & the recolection [sic] of her is one that never dies. As I considder [sic] you my best friend & one in whom I can confide, will ask you to interview her & ascertain whether or not she will respond to my letters, should I write one. I expect to visit that portion of Miss in which you live soon. Lastly, let me know her address & oblige your friend, C. V. Hill. |
