Transcript	Jackson Miss March 14th [18]95 Mr. C.A. Williams Dry Grove Dear Cammie- Your P/C received this morning and I was much comforted to know that mama is improving. When ever I hear mama's being sick I am always uneasy as I know that mama is getting old now and sickness of any kind is dangerous with old people. I have been thinking for some time of writing you but one thing and then another kept me from it. You know I have been busy enough since I came back to school in order to go on with my classes. I am very well up now and have some spare time, which I try to use as profitably as I know how. I have been reading some good books [page 2] and I suppose that is about as improving as most anything. What spare time I have had so far I have put on reading some of Dickens' novels-"Oliver Twist" "David Copperfield", "Tale of Two Cities" and "Dombey and Son", which are typical realistic literature and were I asked to give my opinion on these books I think I should say of all these great books the greatest is "Dombey and Son". I read one of Oliver Wendell Holmes' book "Elsie Venner", a "medicated" novel, which impressed me more than any book I have read this year. It is a book that will cause you to think and wonder and cause a desire to know something about medicine. You should read it by all means. If it were mine I would send it to you. Its purpose is to illustrate the inheritance of original sin and show its effects &c. I read for the first time-"Last Days of Pompeii" and enjoyed it. Bulwer is the novelist in my eyes. I never get a chance to read [page 3] while I am at Terry-my business is so unlike yours-you read some every day-while I never have an opportunity of reading at all in the Winter months only on Sundays and after being at work all the week I feel like-in Bobs' words-"raising hell" on Sunday. I read that book which the novel reading element of the literary class of America are so crazy about-Trilby" and I might say that I was agreeably surprised in the book as I expected it to be something similar to the books which usually cause such a craze-such as "Ships that pass in the night", but I really enjoyed the book and think it good-in fact as good as any book I have read lately. Enough to show you it is good-it does not end like that great book "Ships that pass in the night" which Helen Bolls thought was incomparable, by a buggy running over its heroine, Trilby never came to such a sublime and pathetic [page 4] as did "Bernadine". If Trilby did not cost so much I would buy it and send it to you but it costs $1.75 and can't be bought cheaper. I borrowed a book and read it-from Tom Ford. Enough about this topic so I shall change the thought. Y.M.C.A. Convention meets here in Jaxon this week and we have a holiday tomorrow, which give [sic] us an opportunity to attend. Dr Murrah delivers the address of welcome. You may write me soon as you feel inclined and tell me what every thing and everybody is doing.
