Transcript | Long Beach, Miss. Sept 9 [18]95 Dear Cammie, Your very interesting letter of date the 5th ins't to hand. I never in my life had a more lively interest in a friend than at this time I have for you, knowing as I do the pityable [sic] state of celibacy you are in, it is out of pure sympathy that I speak, the [page 2] day is near brother when our hopes will have vanished like the bloom of the rose & never more to return, like the autumn leaf, then we can exclaim with the poet-"The sadest [sic] words of tongue or pen the sadest [sic] are these, it might have been" The up to date woman is unaproachable [sic] & altogether unlovely[,] exceedingly masculine in her instincts & a bycicle [sic] rider of a most pronounced type[.] "Ah grevous [sic] state! Ah! fatal age, [page 3] With many evils fraught when clubs & social life engage a womans [sic] every thought" I was glad to hear that the crops were fine ("corn") as for cotton it should be a thing of the past buried in the gloom of oblivion for ever, & ever, future generations should profit by the experiences of their forefathers & leave such an unprofitable crop alone. Truck farming here is far ahead of cotton raising in y'r section. My Uncle [page 4] & Aunt who resided in Honduras so long have moved & made their home at this place, in fact we have called a part of this town "Hon' Quarter" for there is Mr Wilson & Wife, Mrs Watrons & F'ly[,] Lewis Hill & F'ly all living quite close to one another. Then there are others from there who contemplate building here. At present I am one of the firm of Hill & Wilson, Drugists, Lo Beach[.] we have quite a nice building & stock. There is Miss Laura Charmichael[,] Annie Hollingsworth [page 5 (written in top margin of page 1)] Ollie C & the ballance [sic] of the dears. Give me a history of the times & the names of the prettiest girls around you[.] I wish to start a matrimonial agency. Yours truly C. V. Hill. |
