Transcript	[written later: "Great-Grandfather E. Fletcher Starr written to grandmother Hutchins (the 1st Martha)"] Nacoochee Ga Dec 2nd 1873 Dear Daughter I wrote to Clarence about three weeks ago, and was surprised it had not been received when his last to us was written. Capt Nichols had spoken to me to mention to him about the calves and pig which he had promised to Clarence. He wishes to know if they will be taken however he has only spoken the one time about it. Mama is in bed with one of her weakly spells. Mamie is busy making a new calico dress. Henry is employed filling up and resanding the front walk. Lattie is busy with the chickens, calves & picking up persimmons, besides scraping [page 2] turnips and a few other little matters. Ellene and George are circulating around generally as spectators and aiders and abettors. We are having generally nice weather for farming opperations [sic] and I am trying to improve the time in that direction. I have two turning ploughs running in good style, one in the Corn field and the other between the ditch and the river about the persimmon tree, that is, beyond the lower side of the new orchard from the house. I propose to plant cotton, Tobacco and sweet potatoes in the Corn field, and corn from the ditch (coming out of Uncle Charles field;) to the river, and all below the ford on the other side of the river. I am running one of my ploughs with oxen and the other with [page 3] Sam and Rock. Miss Linsey has but little [tear] do a little riding occasionally. She is a very sober old thing though. I was sorry to hear that poor Daisy was about to be blind, or was nearly blind. Linsey's eyes are not reliable. I fear she will be blind some day or other. Her eyes are too small and black for good horse eyes. Her eyes have both been a little ailding since I began to feed her on new corn, and I have to feed her cautiously and diet her on that account, tho' she keeps in good order, and is spreading. My cattle have all come in from the mountains except one heifer which I fear will never come as I cannot hear from her of late. How does Clarence get on [page 4] with his [tear] fall ploughing? Has he finished turning over his stubble or land he intends for corn? What does he think about the Holcomb place now? Has he ever sold his four horse wagon-if not, does he wish to sell & what is the running gear worth? I shall have to be moving hay soon and need another wagon; one that I can work four oxen to, and carry two or three thousand pounds at a load. Ellene and George are learning splendidly. Mr Methrin offers to teach again if we can make the inducement sufficient. We are anxious to secure him. We have commenced to organise [sic] a farmer grange in the valley & are to meet this evening to complete the organization. And here I have gone to the bottom of the fourth page, and have said nothing about my boy Guy-How is the little rogue? Tell him he must come up and [top margin of page 3] spend time with GrandPa. [top margin of page 2] Dan Pa received his nice long letter long ago and appreciated it very much but did [margins of page 1] not reply very promptly-he must write again.
