Oral history; interview with Dr. Werner Essig, Professor Emeritus of Animal and Dairy Science, April 2, 2012, Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University. Essig first came to Mississippi State in 1959 as a member of the Animal and Dairy Science Department, focusing on ruminant animal nutrition, specifically beef cattle. He received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas, in 1953 and 1956, respectively, and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1959. During his Mississippi State career, Essig authored than 200 research articles. On the MSU campus, Essig worked in Ballew Hall, but he also has many memories of Lloyd-Ricks and the administrators that worked there. He retired from MSU in 1997 after 38 years of teaching and research. Since his retirement, Essig has become an expert on roses, contributing information to MSU Extension Publications about the plants, and serving as a Consulting Rosarian of the American Rose Society. In this interview, he discusses the relationship between past MSU administrators and researchers, information on Ballew Hall, some of the past faculty housed in Lloyd-Ricks, and the development of the South Farm.
