Oral history; interview with Mr. William E. Poe, May 1, 2012, Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University. Mr. Poe was born October 9, 1936, in Indianola, Mississippi. Poe began his scholarly career here in 1955, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1959. He also received his Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from MSU in 1963. Poe’s professional career included working in the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station Ag Chemistry Department from 1959 to 1968, and in the Department of Biochemistry from 1968 to 1989. Poe retired from Mississippi State as an Associate Biochemist. He co-authored many articles and publications during his long and accomplished career. In this interview, Poe remembers football days with Dudy Noble, the five-and-a-half day work and school week, the move into Dorman Hall, the beginnings of the Biochemistry department, and its work with channel catfish nutrition for that newly-emerging industry. He also fondly remembers many of the staff from the early days of the Lloyd-Ricks Building.
