After a l l clubs were v i s i t e d 15 were enrolled t h i s f i r s t year. The canprehensive l i s t made of t h e improvements. ""' they have and make what they want with t h i s a s an i n c e r t i v e before t h e girls, mor.3 of them became i n t e r e s t e d since none of t h e girls, nor t h e parents had much money t o put i n t o Home Improvement. A c h a i r Bottoming School f o r l e a d e r s and cluS girls was held i n order t o teach t h e p r i n c i p l e s of t h i s skill and t o use a l l of t h e old c h a i r s . They were given demoO F !LFs:, / s t r a t i o n s i n s l i p t o e e r s and t h e r e f i n i s h i n g of f u r n i t u r e gave t h e g i r l s an i d e a of noi in^ t o use sone of t h e t h i n ~ s thev had without thinking of b~ying new f u r n i t u r e o r furniishing. A t t h e end of t h i s year with a l l of t h e help given by t h e l e a d e r s and parents we had one d i s t r i c B winner from t h e N w Zion community, e Miss O l l i e Mae Gladney,and one county winner, ;Lss ' d i l l i e B. M i l l e r of Zion Ridge, with Ilrs. Grey of N w Zion and Ic'ss. S a l l i e Goss of Zion E d g e e working f a i t h f u l l y with these girls. Both of these ,girls c a r r i e d a poultry p r o j e c t t h a t helped t o finance t h e ixprovements made. I n 1950, the s p i r i t was very hiqh; the leaders and club g i r l s were a l l i n t e r e s t e d i n having a b e t t e r place t o l i v e . 12 girls were enrolled with 3 of the girls from the previous years remainin< i n the contest. a The same procedure was f o l l o ~ e d s i n the previous years. lIost of the summer meetings were held i n the homes of these girls i n various communities s o w could help with the improvements made giving other girls e t h e benefit of the demostrations. 'hen the j u d ~ e scame t o visit the county t'nat year, there was no road t o the home of the winner, so a wa.?;on was used t o get the judqes over t o the home of N i l l i e B. t E l l e r and it was driven by M s S a l l i e Goss. r. This was a very i n t e r e s t i n g s i ~ h t . She was second place s t a t e winner and Catherine Brown was county winner. I n 1951, there were 23 g i r l s enterinq the contest and 16 turning i n a completed record with major improvements made, a t the end of t h e contest, I,.liss Sadye B. Hunt of t h e Hiyhpoint comnunity won f i r s t place i n the State. She was a l s o a deleqate t o the Regional Camp t h a t was held i n Tuskegee I n s t i t u t i o n , Tusi.te<ee, Alabama. The contest i n 1952 was very successful. There Irere 27 e n t r i e s and l 9 records turned i n with major improvenents made i n the bedrooms, l i v i i n g rooms and 3 homes added more c l o s e t space and baths. 'Ye only had a county winner t h i s gear and t h i s was Elma Glass of the Center H i l l comunity. She purchased a new mattress fron her savings account; she made new curtains; painted the roam a l i z h t green top and darker sides. The outside was repainted, porch and steps inproved. adding yard chairs and takles. The .4n outdoor l i v i n g room made holes i n the yard were f i l l e d i n and qrass plated. The Happier Livinz Contest has been the Key Point i n stimulating an i n t e r e s t i n the imyroving of the l i v i n g conditions of t h e i r hones. Thanks t o the Parents, Leaders State Staff and Officials of t h e G.M.& 0. Railroad f o r the cooperation i n t h i s project. 'de hope it w i l l continue f o r years t o so a l l of the hmes i n Winstor, Countj may catch the fever and do needed improvements t o change the l i v i n g conditions. Each year w have received r e c o r n t i o n i n the county and s t a t e awards e i n this contest e i t h e r from t h e Leader or Club Girls.
